thoughts about impeachment

Many people, including Democrats, have different thoughts and conclusions regarding the recent Impeachment of President Donald Trump. Based on conversations with people who have approached me at Stop and Shop, Main Street Caffé, Big Y and at work the Impeachment has made an impact on everyone.

What are members of the Cheshire Democratic Town Committee thinking? Below are some comments from CDTC members and the impact the Impeachment has made on them.

From Diane Visconti, former Cheshire Town Councilor and CDTC member:
“The impeachment makes me sad because it was so cleanly divided. It seems there is no truth independent of partisanship.   How can we find common ground if we can't agree on facts?  When power is more important than truth we live in scary times.”

Some say that the Articles of Impeachment accusing the President of Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress should not be forwarded to the Senate until Senate Majority Leader McConnell promises a fair trial; currently, he is avoiding fulfilling his oath of office. Republican Senators have closed ranks, many arguing that witnesses who could
have exonerated Trump were not heard during the House Judiciary proceedings, so why bring those witnesses forward during the Senate trial. This seems like a logical fallacy based on faulty reasoning guided by slavish loyalty and the love of power over the rule of law.”

Therese Bradley, CDTC member and member CDTC Communications Committee: Regardless of what may be said on social media, there is no joy brought about by an impeachment.  That we are where we are at this time in history is no cause for celebration.  It is a time of sorrow.  We are a nation fiercely divided.  Politics are no longer discussed but rather heatedly spewed.  Arguments fly across kitchen tables with barely a shred of validity.  Lies are so commonplace that it’s almost impossible to fact check, so rarely anyone does.  Instead, we perpetuate the propaganda.

The facts of the impeachment charges are very specific:  Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress.  Trump has been brought up on these charges because he has no regard for the law or the Constitution.  He admittedly requested the help of a foreign government to launch an investigation in order to help him get reelected.  He delayed financial aid to that country to try to secure that assistance.  He then refused to participate in the process to defend himself against the charges and now calls the process unfair.

Trump is not being impeached because he is unliked – although he is a talentless Machiavellian.  None of this is new behavior and absolutely none of this is surprising.  What is astonishing is how anyone can overlook his continually unscrupulous conduct and still support him.  This is not a Republican or Democrat issue.  This is a moral issue.  Are we alright with being morally bankrupt?

We need leadership in this country.  We need a true north to guide us to where everyone matters.  We must also face the fact that this does not happen on its own.  It is our duty to seek the facts, actively participate, listen to one another, and always hold our leaders accountable.
