Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018 – today – has become quite the interesting day in the American political scene with three events coming together on three different levels.

Donald Trump celebrates his first year anniversary today as our president. The anniversary is tainted as the U.S. Senate failed to pass a funding bill by midnight last night, which forced a government shutdown. As legislators scramble to find a comprise and solution to the shutdown, wrapped around both aforementioned events is the second annual Women’s March.

Millions of women around the globe are taking to the streets as the Women’s March kicks off today and culminates with a rally in Las Vegas on Sunday to boost voter registration. Many members of the Cheshire Democratic Town Committee local Democratic politicians are participating including CDTC members Kerrie Dunne, Caitlin McCaffery and Judith Slisz who are marching in New York City.

Connecticut Representative Liz Linehan of Cheshire is participating in Hartford and along with the House Democratic Caucus will be co-hosting a reception at the Red Rock Tavern from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Hartford after the Women’s March.

Other Cheshire residents expected to participate in the Women’s March are Diane Visconti, Cheshire Board of Education member Anne Harrigan, Cheshire Town Councilor Patti Flynn-Harris, CDTC members Renee Barley and Andrea Sidoruk.

A year ago millions of men and women marched world wide in the first Women’s March with demonstrators in over 600 cities on every continent. The biggest rally in 2017 was the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. with the focus of the worldwide event on women’s rights and human rights.

This year there are events in several towns and cities including a Hartford Women’s March and the Ride Up Mystic Women’s March in Mystic.

Part two of the 2018 version of the Women’s March takes place on Sunday with a Power to the Polls rally in Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium at 10 a.m. The rally is a kickoff event to mobilize voter registration in conjunction with a national voter registration tour to register new voters and elect more women to office.
