At the skate park, I watch my daughter scale an 8-10 foot ramp with ease, and I start to cry. How many mountains will you have to climb baby girl? As your mom, I hope you’ll never have to make the decision to end a pregnancy. As a legislator, I’ve fought for it to remain YOUR decision. Now I fear your choices, your body, your health are once again at risk, even though my mother fought for your rights, my rights, *our* rights, over 40 years ago. Women’s healthcare has been delivered two striking blows this week. First, the Supreme Court ruled it’s essentially okay to hide healthcare options from you, possibly when you’re in your toughest times, your scariest moments, when you need help, facts, the truth. Second, the swing vote on the High Court, Justice Kennedy, announced his retirement, 4 months short of Election Day. It’s possible that our long-held protections will dissolve if POTUS picks a hateful, ultra-conservative jurist who fires up his base. But let me tell you what else is possible, my dear sweet child. Women are possible. We will rise up, just like we did in the suffragette movement. Just like we did for reproductive rights 40 years ago. Our time is now. I won’t let you down. And if you ever come to make a decision, reproductive or otherwise, I’ll be here to support you, even if you feel our government is not - because I will fight until they are. I love you.
