CHESHIRE--The Cheshire High Young Democrats is a scholastic club activity at the high school that has been active for nearly 10 years, campaigning for candidates in local, state, and federal elections, and have recently been recognized by the High School Democrats of America as the Best Local Chapter in the United States.
One of the highlights of the Cheshire Young Democrats effort to help Democratic candidates is their annual political rally to show support for candidates and to urge residents to get out and vote. The ninth annual Cheshire High Young Democrats Political Rally will be held Oct. 19 at the Cheshire Senior Center on 240 Maple Ave. beginning at 7 p.m.
The cost of admission is $10, which includes dinner, and doors open at 6:30 p.m.
“The Cheshire High Young Democrats are dedicated to supporting Democratic Party candidates and to increasing the engagement of the youth of America in the political process,” Cheshire Young Democrat president Ayan Bhattacharjee said in a prepared press release. “Recently, voter turnout in America has been extremely low. Democrats, who experience the lowest turnout rates, are the most affected by this trend, and can lose elections even when in the majority.
“With this rally, we hope to get voters and volunteers excited for the upcoming election, and to help keep the state of Connecticut a true blue state. This year especially, too much is at stake. This year, multiple candidates running for positions at the state level will be attending our rally.”
The dinner will be catered by NatElla Catering. The Cheshire High Young Democrats will also be collecting donations separately for the Ernest A. DiPietro Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded from the Young Democrats every year to a four-year member of the club who has been active in public service and exemplified the qualities of selflessness and leadership.
The late Ernie DiPietro was a longtime active leader in local Democratic politics and was the chairman of the Cheshire Democratic Town Committee.
State and Federal Democratic candidates will be at the event to meet and greet voters. In addition, other distinguished guest speakers will also be addressing the attendees. A detailed list of distinguished guests will be released the week of the event.
According to Bhattacharjee, the Cheshire High Young Democrats have hosted an annual political rally each year as a way to get voters excited and engaged in the political process.
“By hosting this rally, we hope to increase voter turnout on Election Day (Nov. 6),” Bhattacharjee said. “We also want to provide the opportunity for local residents to meet and interact with the Democratic candidates running for office.”
