The Cheshire, Connecticut Democratic Town Committee
The Cheshire Democratic Town Committee strives to build a better Cheshire by assisting local Democrats who want to run for office, serve as appointed town Board and Commission members, or work on campaigns for town, state, and federal candidates. We believe in preparing for a better future through careful planning and hard work. We are committed to the continued growth of Cheshire as one of the best places in the country to live, work and raise a family. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Cheshire Senior Center unless conditions warrant a virtual meeting. All registered Democrats are welcome to attend. Statement regarding Animal Control
At a special meeting of the Town Council on September 11, the Town and Cheshire Police Department accepted responsibility for the lapses in oversight and procedures that led to and enabled failures by the Animal Control Officer. Mistakes were made and these are being addressed.
The Town and Police Department laid out the changes that have already been implemented and the ongoing updates to improve the animal control building. These updates and changes go beyond the new and improved state regulations that all towns will have to comply with by 2029. The Town Council supports the Town and Police Department in having an animal control facility that meets the high standards we demand from our schools and all other town departments.
Cheshire Democrats and many members of the public were disgusted by signage at the Fall Festival at the Republican Town Committee's booth, suggesting Republicans were the only ones concerned about animal welfare.
Cheshire Democrats reject the extreme and cynical Republican tactics to politicize and stir up anger and divisiveness over the circumstances that led to the tragic mistreatment of animals at the town's animal control facility.
Cheshire deserves and expects leadership that accepts mistakes were made, works to fix the problems and ensures these mistakes can't ever happen again. This is what the town and police department have done. This is also what the entire Council has done (or so we thought at the special meeting last week.)
The Democratic majority on the Council is eager to explore measures and reforms that improve transparency and accountability. This is about lasting change, not petty politics.

Town Council - July 8, 2025This recording of the Cheshire Town Council meeting on July 8, 2025 includes a discussion of the Animal Control facility. Cheshire Town Attorney Jeff Donofrio lays out some of the issues involved.
From Town Council Vice Chair Jim Jinks: "The Town will have more to come on the investigation and resolution of this matter. But if you'd like to see an excellent presentation of the Town's approach (and why the Council has had to stay quiet on this matter for so long), I urge you to watch from about the 18:40 mark through the 49:25 mark." |
