Ironically, April 6-April 12 is nationally recognized as the Week of the Young Child.
Last night the Cheshire Town Council by a vote of 5-4 passed an alternative budget which paves the way for the implementation of full day kindergarten this fall.
I want to personally thank my fellow Council members Patti Flynn-Harris, Liz Linehan, Sylvia Nichols and Rob Oris for supporting this important measure.
The original budget would have cut the Board of Education’s budget request by $1.9M making it impossible for them to go forward with FDK. We worked very hard to come up with a budget that, from a bottom line perspective, was almost identical but allowed us to grant the BOE $2.3M, which allows them to proceed with FDK. It also will add Sunday hours at the Cheshire Public Library from January through March. Budgets aren’t just about numbers and last night we were also able to add services for our citizens.
I’m very proud of this bi-partisan effort and hope that we can continue to work collaboratively as a Council going forward.
