I would like to start by thanking Superintendent Greg Florio for his dedication to our children and to wish him the best in his new endeavor.
It is the duty of the Board of Education (“BOE”) to employ “an able and qualified superintendent”, by majority vote. Once elected, the superintendent will have “complete administrative oversight of the school system and shall be responsible for the efficient operation of the system in all its divisions.”
Filling a vacancy of such vital importance cannot be done in haste. With the election of four out of seven Board of Education members less than a month away, it certainly should not be done before the new Board is elected and before the elected members have begun their term. As the BOE has authority to appoint an interim superintendent, there is no reason for a hasty decision. Let the search for a new superintendent be done with the due diligence our students, teachers and town deserve.
We are in the unique position of needing to fill such a vacancy so close to an election. Let’s take advantage of that opportunity, by letting you decide what qualities you seek in a new Superintendent, by your voice now and your vote on Nov. 3rd.
We have the collective opportunity to conduct an extensive search for a candidate that will continue to move Cheshire forward. Let’s find someone who has an understanding of the ever-changing global market and will help us with policies and initiatives to prepare our students to compete. Let’s find someone who cares deeply about the individuality of students and understands that a child’s success can be measured in many ways. Let’s find someone that recognizes the challenges facing our students and teachers and who has, and is, open to new ideas. Most importantly, let’s find someone who is passionate about education and who will be an inspiration to our children. After searching far and wide, if we find the best candidate is here, already one of our own, at least we can be confident when we tell our children that we did all we could to provide them with the best.
I’d like to hear from you. What qualities would you like to see in a superintendent? Please email me at email@example.com.
