On March 23rd, Esty will be one of five women honored with the Women of Distinction award presented by the Connecticut Federation of Democratic Women at a dinner at Tastebuds Banquet facility in East Hartford from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
While a member of the Cheshire Town Council from 2005-2008, Esty was a champion of senior citizens, especially in providing tax relief to seniors. Being fiscally responsible was her mantra, and, as always, she was a strong advocate for education.
Serving in the Connecticut General Assembly from 2009-2011, she cut her own pay, championed the rights and benefits for gay couples, and when Pratt & Whitney closed in Cheshire, Esty focused on securing retirement packages and searching for job replacements for the 1,000 workers laid off. As a United States Representative for Connecticut’s 5th District 2012-present, her priorities are job creation and economic development. She also advocates for small business, is a strong proponent of gun control measures, and continues to make education a focus, including co-authoring the STEM Education Act to strengthen science, technology engineering and math education efforts.
Others receiving the Women of Distinction honor at the CFDW dinner event are Roz Loiacono of Colchester, Eileen Driscoll of East Hartford, Jonette Mansel Franklin of Greater Hartford Progressive, and Kathleen Harrington of Southeastern Connecticut. The guest speaker will be state Senator Mae Flexer (29th District), who is also executive director of Emerge CT. Tickets are $46 and there will also be a silent auction. Esty was nominated for the honor by the Cheshire Democratic Women’s Club. The award recognizes Women of Distinction who are tireless workers for the Federation of Democratic Women who are dedicated to Democratic ideals and to the election of Democratic women and men.
“The CDWC members unanimously felt that Elizabeth exemplified all the characteristics for this award,” said Pat McKenney, president of the CDWC. “She works tirelessly for our community, attending all functions that she is able, helping out local candidates, listening to individual concerns. We believe she inspires others to serve in a political office. We are very proud of our Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty and feel fortunate that we are able to honor her with this award.”
Presenting Esty with her award at the event will be Cheshire Town Councilor Patti Flynn-Harris.
Cheshire Democratic Town Committee chairperson Judy Villa said, “The Cheshire Democratic Town Committee is proud that our own dedicated Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty is being recognized as a woman of distinction. She works tirelessly for social justice and government that truly serves others.”
